TALES & SCALES LAUNCHES 2008-2009 LOCAL SCHOOL TOUR WITH “A DAY OF TALES & SCALES” AT HOLY REDEEMER SCHOOL

Evansville, Indiana, October 1, 2008 - This Friday, October 3, marks the launch of Tales & Scales 2008-2009 local school tour with an entire day of Tales & Scales programming at Holy Redeemer School. Now in its 22nd year, Tales & Scales continues to ignite the imaginations of young people through innovative and compelling interdisciplinary performing arts educational experiences. This year, Tales & Scales has launched a new program that combines in-school performances with hands-on, interactive workshops – “A Day of Tales & Scales.” At Holy Redeemer School, Tales & Scales will perform The Little Dragon for the entire school at 9am, followed by Imagination Blast! Workshops for targeted grades throughout the day (10:30am Junior High, 12:30pm Grades 3-5, 1:40pm Grades K-2).

Founded in 1986, Evansville’s own Tales & Scales is an innovative ensemble that seeks to ignite, nurture, and fully engage the imaginations of young people through musictelling – a unique blend of music, story, theater, and creative movement. Tales & Scales annually reaches over 50,000 young people, touring original musictelling productions with companion workshops specifically designed for the young people in schools throughout southwestern Indiana and across the nation.

Other upcoming school visits include: “A Day of Tales & Scales” at Holy Cross School in Fort Branch, Resurrection School in Evansville, St. Matthew School in Mt. Vernon, and Corpus Christi School in Evansville (featuring school-wide performances of The Little Dragon, Imagination Blast! student workshops, and Teach Through the Arts educator workshops), and after-school residencies at Cedar Hall and Culver Elementary Schools. Space is still available for schools to be added to the 2008-2009 Tales & Scales schedule! Call (812) 425-8741 to reserve a date or visit www.talesandscales.org for more information about Tales & Scales programming.

This season, Tales & Scales is excited to welcome four new artists. They are: Hilary Abigana (flute), Jason Gresl (clarinet), Liza Malamut (trombone), and Greg Jukes (percussion). Hilary Abigana, a California native, holds degrees from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Eastman School of Music. In 2008, she was a silver medalist in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition as a member of Trio Destino. Jason Gresl moved to Evansville from South Bend, Indiana where he served as the Education Director of the South Bend Symphony and a member of Claricello, the Ensemble-in-Residence at Saint Mary’s College. He holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Colorado-Boulder. Liza Malamut, originally from New Jersey, earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Boston University. In addition to performing on the trombone, Liza is an avid sackbut player and has performed with many early music ensembles across the nation. Percussionist Greg Jukes studied at the Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University. In 2005, he made his concerto debut with the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra at Strathmore Hall in Bethesda, Maryland.

Tales & Scales’ 2008-2009 Local School Tour is made possible, in part, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Indiana Arts Commission, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, Vectren Corporation, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Target, The Earl S. McDaniel Foundation, The Mesker Music Trust, Bussing- Koch Foundation, The BMI Foundation, and The City of Evansville.
